E-commerce or a brochure site?

· 2 min read

Not every business needs a shopping cart. The questions that separate the ones that do from the ones that only need to be found.

"If I am building a site anyway, it may as well sell" sounds sensible, and for most businesses it is the wrong call. E-commerce is not a feature bolted onto a brochure site; it is a separate operation. Decide with these questions.

Does your product fit in a box?

If it does, a cart is worth discussing. If it does not — air-conditioning installation, dentistry, law, renovation, consulting, hairdressing — you do not need a cart. You need bookings and quote requests. In those trades the sale closes on the phone or in person; the site's job is to produce that call.

Is your price fixed?

If every customer pays the same, a cart works. If the price depends on measurements, distance or scope, the cart fails: the customer cannot see a price and abandons it. What works there is a well-built quote form.

Who will keep stock updated?

This is e-commerce's invisible cost. Removing sold-out items, entering tracking numbers, processing refunds — that is somebody's daily job. Without that person you will be selling items you do not have within a month.

Can you handle returns and a payment gateway?

Selling online brings legal obligations: distance selling terms, pre-sale information, a right of withdrawal, a returns process. None of it is optional. A payment gateway is also a separate application with a bank, and it is not granted to every business straight away.

There is a middle path

For most businesses the honest answer is "not yet". Start with a brochure site, list your products without a cart, take orders by phone or WhatsApp. Add the cart once you can see the demand is real. That order saves both money and time.

In short

  • Shippable, fixed price, trackable stock: e-commerce makes sense.
  • Services, site visits, variable pricing: brochure site plus a quote form.
  • Not sure: start with the brochure site and grow. The reverse is far more expensive.
